Sept. 2-Sept. 9, North Carolina to Nova Scotia: called the "Hurricane of Independence," it is believed that 4,170 in the U.S. and Canada died in the storm.

Aug. 11, Last Island, La.: 400 died.

Aug. 28, Savannah, Ga., Charleston, S.C., Sea Islands, S.C.: at least 1,000 died.

Aug. 25-Sept. 7, Caribbean Islands to New England: "David" caused 5 U.S. deaths 1,200 in the Dominican Republic.

Aug. 3-10, Caribbean Islands to Texas Gulf: "Allen" killed 28 in the U.S.; over 200 killed in Caribbean.

Sept. 10-22, Caribbean Sea and South and North Carolina: "Hugo" claimed 49 U.S. lives (71 killed overall) and $4.2 billion were paid in insurance claims.

1992
Aug. 22-26, South Florida, Louisiana, and Bahamas: Gulf Coast hurricane "Andrew" with damage in South Florida alone estimated at $20.6 billion (est. $7.3 billion in private insurance claims) is the most costly U.S. hurricane.
