Woman dies after being swept over Niagara Falls
NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. - Authorities say they've recovered the body of a woman who appeared to be swimming in the Niagara River before being swept over the brink of Niagara Falls.
Officials say tourists on the Canadian side of the river reported seeing the woman in the water above the falls around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Witnesses on the Maid of the Mist tour boat told CBS affiliate WIVB-TV in Buffalo that they saw her go over the falls. They said she appeared to be alive at the time she went over the Falls. Witnesses on the Maid of the Mist told WIVB that rescuers were on the scene as the woman neared the Falls and were forced to watch helplessly as she plummeted over them.
The Maid of the Mist dispatched a boat to try and save the woman. But when rescuers reached her in the river below, she was dead.
No information on the woman has been released by Canadian authorities and it isn't clear how she ended up in the water.
Foul play is not suspected, and the identity of the woman, who witnesses say was in her 30's, has not yet been determined by officials, WIVB reports.
