White House Conclave
This story was written by CBS News Early Show co-anchor Harry Smith.
What a picture this morning from Washington. All those former defense secretaries and secretaries of state in the White House to confer with President Bush. It's a little bit of a mystery why at this late date, the White House which pretty much paddles its own canoe, suddenly wants all this input.
If somebody says invading Iraq wasn't such a good idea, are they going to say you're right, wished we'd called you three years ago? Somebody suggested that this is a way for the president to not seem so much in the bubble some folks believe he lives in.
I'm thinking maybe this is the first of a series of Thursday morning meetings where the White House will solicit opinions from folks from all walks of life. There will be school teacher days, firefighter days, CEO days, student days — you get the idea. And the more contrary the opinion, the better.
Wouldn't you like to be invited? Sounds like fun.
