Wheelchair ramp stolen from N.Y. woman’s home
NEW YORK - A wheelchair-bound woman had her ramp stolen Thursday from outside her home in Yonkers, N.Y. and now the city is stepping in to help out, CBS New York reports.
Cynthia Knox, 71, who lost her left leg five years ago, told the station she needs the ramp to get to and from dialysis appointments, which she has three times a week.
Knox told the station the thief is "completely heartless."
"There wouldn't be a ramp out there if somebody didn’t need it,” she said.
Knox told the station that her daughter had paid $1,000 for the ramp.
A neighbor offered to donate a used ramp, but
it was too short. Then, a construction crew was sent by Mayor Mike Spano’s
office to measure for work, reports the station.
“Whatever the city is willing to do, I think it’s wonderful,” Knox said.
The landlord, however, said he didn’t want a
wooden structure, so the mayor’s office is trying to find a donated metal ramp, according to the station.
If the stolen ramp doesn't turn up, a spokesman for Mayor Spano reportedly said he expects to install a donated, metal ramp.
