VA Tech's AD Weaver To Stay

Virginia Tech athletic director Jim Weaver was given a five-year contract extension on Tuesday.

Weaver, 54, came to Virginia Tech in 1997 after spending two years as athletic director at Western Michigan. He replaced Dave Braine, who left Tech after nine years to become athletic director at Georgia Tech.

The terms of Weaver's contract were not released. His current base salary is $165,000.

"I'm excited about my future here at Virginia Tech and the momentum the football program is gaining," said Weaver, whose current contract expires in 2001.

The football team is ranked fifth in the Associated Press' weekly poll.

Virginia Tech president Paul Torgersen said he's pleased with Weaver's accomplishments and hopes he stays with the program until he's ready to retire.

"We fully anticipate Jim Weaver to be with us the next 12-13 years and the athletic enterprise prospering under his leadership," Torgersen said.

One of Weaver's top priorities when he was hired was to get all of the university's sports into a single conference. That goal was accomplished in August when the Big East announced that Virginia Tech would become a full member of the conference beginning in the 2001-02 academic year.
