US Airways and regional carrier US Airways Express serve up more than 4,100 flights a day, mainly from hubs in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Charlotte, N.C. Most destinations are in the eastern United States, but flights also go to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and five European countries.

US Airways provides commuter service from several West Virginia airports and is a major carrier out of Yeager Airport in Charleston, W.Va.

A separate subsidiary of parent US Airways Group Inc. operates the US Airways Shuttle commuter service that connects Boston, New York and Washington.

A brief company history:

1939:
All American Aviation brings the first airmail service to many small western Pennsylvania and Ohio Valley communities.

1948:
Piedmont Airlines begins operations.

1953:
Now known as All American Airways, its route system grows and the name is changed to Allegheny Airlines.

1967:
The first Allegheny Commuter service begins, between Hagerstown, Md. and Baltimore/Washington International Airport by Henson Aviation, forerunner of today's Piedmont Airlines. It was the beginning of today's network of 10 regional airlines that eventually becomes US Airways Express service to 172 cities.

1972:
Allegheny acquires Mohawk Airlines, a Utica, N.Y., airline with service to most cities throughout New York and New England.

1979:
Allegheny changes its name to USAir to reflect its expanding network.

1984:
USAir introduces its Frequent Traveler program, which provides travel benefits to USAir's most loyal customers.

1989:
Piedmont is integrated into USAir, in what is the largest merger in airline history to date. The merger brings with it Piedmont's international routes as well as its Charlotte, Baltimore, Dayton and Syracuse hubs. Baltimore and Charlotte remain hubs.

1991:
Company lays off 7,100 workers, due to high fuel costs.

1997:
The name US Airways is put into use officially.

1998:
US Airways Inc., purchased Shuttle Inc., from a consortium of banks, creating US Airways Shuttle.
