Trump's gold holiday ornament is now on sale
Like many other things associated with his improbable election as president, Donald Trump’s Christmas ornament -- a red metallic hat with “Make America Great Again” in white block letters -- has undergone some changes.
The Trump campaign has slashed the price of the 24-karat gold-finished piece of holiday décor from $149 to $99 after critics of the real estate tycoon raised a fuss. An earlier description of the trinket said it contained the cheaper 14-karat gold. The reason for the discrepancy in the gold and the price cut wasn’t clear. Trump spokeswoman Hope Hicks didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. She told the New York Daily News the mementos were made in the U.S., though she didn’t specify a manufacturer.
According to pitch sent to supporters, the real estate tycoon “loves Christmas and makes a point of proudly saying ‘Merry Christmas’ every chance he gets.” Two sellers on Amazon (AMZN), however, apparently aren’t feeling the same sort of holiday spirit.
One using the handle Friendo L.L.C., is offering the Trump ornament in what it describes as new condition for $195.50 plus $4.49 for shipping. Another seller called ForTheLoveofGame has two listings for the Trump holiday keepsake for $244.99 (with free shipping), one of which is “collector” quality. Both merchants say the Trump ornament is on back order, though the campaign has them in stock. Efforts to reach the Amazon sellers through the e-commerce giant’s site were unsuccessful.
Some have speculated that the listings may not be genuine, but both Friendo and ForTheLoveofGame have other non-Trump items for sale.
Reviews from some of the merchants’ customers about the Trump Christmas hat are downright snarky, such as user Simon Webb, who noted it “is so yuge that it has totally unbalanced my whole tree. No matter where I hang it, the tree leans waaaaaay over to the far right.”
Added customer Benjamin A. Day: This ornament appeared on my tree, against my own choice, and now my tree is very aggressive towards my wife.” Fans of the Donald, such as River, are proud to own the Trump keepsake, telling critics: “Because of you and your votes we got Obama and because of Obama we got President Trump.”
Budget-conscious Trump fans have a plethora of other ornament choices to show their support for the former reality-TV star. There’s a plastic version of the “Make America Great” hat on eBay for $24.99. Unfortunately, it’s currently shown as being out of stock.
