Incumbent

Governor Don Sundquist(R)

Opponent

John Jay Hooker(D)
Race outlookStrong Republican

Republican Governor Don Sundquist faces virtually no challenge for re-election to his second term. His Democratichallenger John Jay Hooker, a self-styled "supergadfly," is running more as a publicity stunt for his pet reform issues and not as a serious candidate.

Governor Sundquist is running on his record of accomplishments, which includes bipartisan passage of a major crime bill, welfare reform and expanding health care to children. Sundquist's strength in the polls and $5 million war chest scared off more serious challengers.

Hooker is a colorful Nashville lawyer who won the Democratic primary on name recognition alone -- this marks his sixth appearance on a statewide ballot in Tennesee. He has no campaign staff and is not raising money. Instead, he is using the race to highlight two issues: the need for campaign finance reform and for changing the method for selecting state appellate judges.

No incumbent governor in Tennessee has lost a
re-election bid since the law was changed in 1978 to allow a governor to
serve consecutive terms. 1998 should not be any different. No public polling
data is available, but Sundquist should win in a landslide.
