BOOKS: The birthplace of Pinocchio | Watch Video
The tiny Tuscan town of Collodi was the birthplace of Pinocchio. Created in 1881 by journalist-author Carlo Lorenzini (who took the town's name as his pen name), the wooden puppet who became a real boy was the star of a coming-of-age story much darker than the familiar Disney film. The Corsini estate, Villa Le Corti, sits high atop a hillside outside Florence, in the Tuscan wine region of Chianti, on land Princess Giorgiana Corsini's family has owned since the 1300s. In 1990, American professor and poet Frances Mayes felt an irresistible urge to buy a derelict 300-year-old property. Seth Doane explores the Neapolitan love of coffee with tour guide Marcello Uzzi, and attends lessons at the Italian coffee powerhouse Illy's own University of Coffee in Trieste, where the highly-calibrated method of preparing the perfect cup of espresso is taught.

FROM 1979: Architect I.M. Pei on the JFK Library (Video)
I.M. Pei, one of the most heralded of 20th century architects, died on May 16, 2019 at the age of 102. In this "CBS Sunday Morning" report which aired on October 21, 1979, Pei talked with correspondent Marlene Sanders as they toured Boston's newly-dedicated John F. Kennedy Presidential Library (which he designed), and discussed creating a public space that captured the essence, and promise, of the man who was our nation's 35th president.
FROM 2008: Doris Day, the "Girl Next Door" (Video)
One of the most popular and enduring stars of film, music and television was Doris Day (1922-2019), who in later years retreated for the most part from the public eye, devoting her life to animal rights causes. In this "Sunday Morning" report which originally aired July 13, 2008, correspondent Jerry Bowen talked about Day's career, her legacy, and her privacy with biographer David A. Kaufman, author of "Doris Day: The Untold Story of the Girl Next Door"; cabaret singer Mary Cleere Haran, who created a one-woman show dedicated to the songs of Doris Day; and friend and frequent co-star Kaye Ballard.
FROM 2017: Author Herman Wouk (Video)
Bestselling author Herman Wouk ("The Caine Mutiny," "The Winds of War," "War and Remembrance") passed away on May 17, 2019, ten days before his 104th birthday. In this interview that aired on "Sunday Morning" July 2, 2017, the reclusive Pulitzer Prize-winner invited correspondent Tracy Smith to his Palm Springs home, and talked about a career conjuring fiction from real life.
