They've Got A Ticket To Write
What do the Beatles, Celine Dion, and Jewel all have in common? Your local Barnes and Noble has the answer. And in this report for CBS News, so does VH-1's Rebecca Rankin.
All of the above have topped the music charts. And now they're hoping their latest works will put them atop the best-seller's list.
That's right. Some of today's hottest musicians are expressing themselves through writing—not songs, but books. Artists turned authors—it's a growing trend.
Encouraged by the success of her 1998 poetry collection, Jewel is at it again with Chasing Down the Dawn. This time the singer/songwriter gives a look into her life through vignettes, poems, photos and drawings.
"You do get a feel for how my mind works, how I put things together, how I add things up," Jewel says.
Retiring from the music business hasn't prevented Celine Dion from releasing a book, My Story, My Dream. In it she tells her life story, including intimate details of her love for, and ultimate marriage to, manager Rene Angelil.
"I had no doubt that one day or other we'd be lovers. And I knew it would last a lifetime," Dion writes.
Thirty-six years after the British invasion, the new Beatles anthology boasts that it's the only Beatles book by the Beatles. Information and images— some of them never before seen— were contributed by the three surviving members and John Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono.
Don't worry, these authors haven't given up music altogether. Celine Dion: The Collectors Series, Volume 1 features collaborations and some tracks which were previously unreleased in this country.
And Jewel's in the middle of a solo tour and working on material for a new album.
Both of their books, and the Beatles anthology, are in stores now.
