Sure, he’s got a tendency to sexually harass women at work and cheat on them outside of the office. Oh, and drink like a fish. But professionally, Don is well respected. McKee says a lot of that starts with the way he presents himself: fit, groomed and well-dressed. “Unfortunately it’s still true that there is often a bias against people who don’t present themselves appropriately — whether it’s being obese, having unkempt facial hair or, for a women, showing too much cleavage,” says McKee.

The wrong dress can derail your career, but the right look can make you upwardly mobile. “When HR is talking about who to promote, they want people who look [the part],” says McKee.
