The Guardian Gets In The Game

As part of its new Editor's Blog the Guardian newspaper has posted a written description of its morning editorial meeting (hat tip, Buzz Machine). A sample:

Morning conference was busy again with the usual overspill into the office corridor. I'll get you some pictures of this as soon as I've mastered my compact digital camera (the picture of last night's meeting in the newsroom was taken by a pro).

No surprises in later editions last night. There was a routine shuffling of stories as details of the six seriously ill volunteers in a drug trial came in, news emerged of a possible visit of the pope to Britain, additional material was added to the Jericho stories on pages 1, 2 &3, a late arts review from Sheffield Crucible was filed, along with some some smaller news stories and adjustments to city prices.

Production was smooth with no problems reported so you should all have had your papers on time this morning.

Early news lists include more updates on yesterday's main stories from Jericho, the Milosovich funeral arrangements in Belgrade, the failed drug tests, and the pensions report from the parliamentary ombudsman, Ann Abraham. The vote on the education bill takes place this evening, and the transport secretary, Alistair Darling, will flesh out his proposals for faster and longer trains on the railways.

So far, the Guardian's blog has provided similar overviews for other editorial meetings and it appears this will be its main function – a sort of constant running dialogue of the action behind the scenes. At PE we've tried to provide a measure of that as well – having taped and posted video of two main morning editorial meetings at CBS News, a lineup meeting, control room action and even debriefing interviews.

We plan to continue giving occasional glimpses into these parts of the process and many others and we're always open to suggestions and feedback from our readers. Would you like to see more of it? What other behind-the-scenes activities are you interested in learning about?
