Surgery For Mets Players


Three New York Mets and their hitting coach will undergo surgery Friday, while three other players who underwent MRIs will not need to be operated on.

Left-hander Al Leiter, third baseman Robin Ventura, right-hander Billy Taylor, and hitting coach Mickey Brantley are scheduled for surgery Friday by team physician Dr. David Altchek at the Hospital for Special Surgery.

Leiter will have the patella tendon on his left knee debrided, Ventura the lateral meniscus of his left knee debrided, and Taylor the medial meniscus of his left knee debrided. Brantley will have bone spurs removed from his left ankle.

Left-hander John Franco, second baseman Edgardo Alfonzo and outfielder Darryl Hamilton underwent MRIs on their knees Thursday, but will not require surgery.
