Summerall Calling It Quits After 2001

Pat Summerall plans to retire as an NFL broadcaster after the 2001 season.

He was to announce the decision Monday at a news conference in Los Angeles, Fox Sports spokesman Dan Bell said. Commentator John Madden, who has worked with Summerall since 1981, was to attend the news conference.

Summerall's contract expires after the upcoming season. Fox will give him a one-year extension that will allow him to call a record 16th Super Bowl.

The 70-year-old announcer may continue to work for Fox on non-football assignments.

Summerall has broadcast games for CBS and Fox since the end of his playing career in 1962 as a kicker with the New York Giants.
