Staying Back In School

Most kids move up to a new grade in school every year—even if they do very badly in their classes. A lot of teachers and principals think it hurts kids' feelings to hold them back a year.

But that's starting to change for students like 12-year-old Damion. He lives in Waco, Texas, where kids now have to pass a special test to move onto the next grade. Damion failed the test. So did nearly half the kids in his school.

"I don't want to go back to the sixth; I might get laughed at," Damion said.

More and more schools have decided to hold kids back if they do badly in a grade hoping they can do better the second time.
