Snowboards On Wheels

In Snow Valley, California, CBS 'This Morning' Senior Correspondent Hattie Kaufman samples a Mountainboard, an all-terrain board that extends the thrill of racing down a mountain into the summer.

Riding an all-terrain board is described as snowboarding without the snow, a hybrid of skateboarding and snowboarding. But, in this case, there is no snow to help cushion a fall.

The boarders dodge trees and jump moguls as they speed down the rugged terrain. Protective padding is essential, and manufacturers recommend the full gamut of gear, including a helmet, wrist guards, protective eyewear, elbow and knee pads, and durable footwear.

The board is the size and shape of a snowboard, and is mounted atop four oversized air-filled tires with a suspension system. Deflating the tires will decrease the speed of the board, while hard full tires will allow the rider to careen down a slope at a full adrenaline rush.

Jay Reed, marketing director for Snow Valley Mountain Park in California, calls it a "truly magnificent sport".

"I mean it's a lot of fun to watch. It's got all the elements, people crashing,Â… blood and dirt," he says.

At Snow Valley, they are hoping the riders will become the answer to empty lifts during the summer.

Snow Valley has one course set up for the new sport. Called the Durt, the course is a 1,500-foot run complete with jumps, obstacles, and vertical drops.

"One day, we hope to have all the lifts running," Reed says, "and be able to have riders come all the way down from the top."
