Seles Wins Bausch Title

Monica Seles defeated Conchita Martinez 6-3, 6-2 in the finals of the Bausch & Lomb Championships Sunday.

Each scored straight-set victories earlier in the day to advance to the title match after repeated weather delays toyed with the event's schedule.

In the semifinals of the first clay-court event of the season, the third-seeded Seles defeated Paola Suarez 6-3, 6-2, while fourth-seeded Martinez beat 12th-seeded Elena Likhovtseva , also 6-3, 6-2.

Seles was the defending champion of this event. Martinez won it in 1995.

Seles has dominated her series with Martinez, winning 18 of 19 matches over 11 years and losing only three sets. Last year in the semifinals at Amelia Island, Seles beat Martinez 6-0, 6-1. Martinez had taken a total of 11 games against Seles in four matches last year.

Seles earned $87,000.
