Rupert Murdoch joins Twitter

Stephen Lovekin

(CBS) - On Dec. 31, News Corporation chief executive officer Rupert Murdoch quietly joined the twitterverse with a simple tweet.

"Have just. Read The Rational Optimist. Great book," @rupertmurdoch tweeted.

Twitter co-founder and executive chairman Jack Dorsey made a rare introduction to his followers Saturday.

"With his own voice, in his own way, @RupertMurdoch is now on Twitter," @jack tweeted.

There's even an interesting exchange between the two men over simplifying in the New Year.

"My resolution for the past few years: simplify," @jack tweeted. Murdoch responded with "right on 'simplify' but easier in startups. My resolutions, try to maintain humility and always curiosity. And of course diet!"

Murdoch is taking time to promote his companies, of course. He mentions reading the Wall Street Journal and watching the films "Descendents" and "We Bought a Zoo."

The move to join Twitter is surprising. According to the Associated Press, Murdoch has been trying to maintain a low profile since the hacking scandal that involved his U.K. newspapers.

The media mogul currently has over 53,000 followers. Murdoch's wife, Wendi Deng is also on Twitter with the handle @Wendi_Deng.

Correction: @Wendi_Deng was a fake account that was verified for one day on Twitter, before being exposed.
