Rockets Edge Warriors


Charles Barkley scored 24 points and the Houston Rockets overcame a 19-point deficit to win their seventh straight game, 87-86 over the Golden State Warriors on Saturday night.

Barkley made one of two free throws with 17 seconds remaining to give the Rockets an 87-83 lead. Golden State then missed three shots before John Starks connected on a 3-pointer with nine-tenths of a second left.

The Warriors had a final chance after Houston's long inbounds pass went off Barkley's fingers and out of bounds with six-tenths of a second remaining. But Antawn Jamison's long pass was knocked away as time expired.

  • Barkley grabbed 11 rebounds for the Rockets, while Jamison led the Warriors with 23 points.

    The Warriors, who led 62-57 after the third quarter, lost for the seventh time in 16 games this season when they have led or been tied heading into the fourth quarter.

    Golden State scored the first four points of the second half to stretch a 49-34 halftime lead to 19 points.

    But with Hakeem Olajuwon on the bench after getting his fourth foul early in the third quarter, the Rockets rallied. They outscored the Warriors 21-4 over a seven-minute span, pulling within 57-54 on a pair of free throws by Cuttino Mobley with 3:36 left in the period.

    Olajuwon scored on a finger roll with 7:19 remaining to give Houston its first lead since the second quarter, 69-67. The Rockets never trailed again.

    Jamison scored eight of his 10 first-half points during a 20-4 run that gave Golden State a 44-29 lead. Notes: Houston has won 12 of 13 games at Golden State. ... Tony Delk has missed 23 of his last 27 field-goal attempts. ... Jason Caffey returned for the Warriors after missing two games with tendinitis in his right Achilles tendon. ... The Warriors are 0-5 on Saturdays. ... Barkley moved past Elgin Baylor into 15th place on the NBA's career scorng list with 23,171 points. Next up is Adrian Dantley at 23,177.
