Red Sox Beef Up Rotation

Boston Red Sox pitcher Bret Saberhagen has a frayed rotator cuff, but he said Monday he will postpone surgery until after the season in the hopes that he can pitch again this year.

Also, Red Sox manager Jimy Williams said the team will activate Ramon Martinez from the 60-day disabled list to start on Thursday against Kansas City.

Saberhagen, 35, is 9-5 with a 3.36 ERA this season. The two-time Cy Young Award winner missed most of 1996-97 after unrelated surgery on his right shoulder.

Martinez, the older brother of Red Sox ace Pedro Martinez, has missed the entire season after right shoulder surgery. He has a 123-77 record and 3.45 ERA in parts of 11 seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
