Red Sox Activate Gordon

Boston Red Sox closer Tom Gordon, who has converted a major league-record 46 straight save chances, was activated from the 15-day disabled list Monday.

Gordon last pitched April 17 against Tampa Bay when he walked off the mound in the ninth inning with what was diagnosed as a "strained elbow."

Gordon, who has converted his first three save situations this season to extend his record, had not allowed an earned run in five games before the injury. He has recorded 11 outs in the five games.

"Flash is back," Red Sox manager Jimy Williams said before the game, referring to the right-hander's nickname. "He's our closer."

Gordon experienced pain in his elbow during spring training and missed the first two weeks of games.

During is absence, the Red Sox tried a few closers, the last was knuckleballer Tim Wakefield, who converted his only two chances. Derek Lowe and Kip Gross also had opportunities, going just 2-for-4.

To make room for Gordon, the Red Sox optioned infielder Donnie Sadler to Pawtucket after Sunday's game.
