The 40-year-old Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts has finally gotten the royal stamp of approval.

And it has come from the unlikeliest of sources.

Festival goers settling in for a day of music by the likes of Snoop Dogg and Willie Nelson were astounded when Britain's Prince Charles appeared on the Pyramid Stage. It was the first royal visit ever for the festival in Somerset which traditionally draws as many as 150,000 people.

The 61-year-old heir to the throne toured the festival's Greenpeace field and the Queen's Head stage, according to the BBC, and had a go at the Water Aid charity's "welly shy", which involved throwing a tennis ball into a boot.

Asked whether he was enjoying his visit, he answered: "How could I not?"

Word of his visit quickly spread through the 900-acre campsite and crowds soon gathered around the stage. Shouts of "Charlie, Charlie" and "give us a wave" went up from the audience, the BBC reported.
