Poll: Romney's wealth an issue for 20 percent of voters

A new Gallup Poll released Thursday reveals that three-quarters of voters say Mitt Romney's personal fortune makes no difference in their views of him, but 20 percent of voters say it makes them less likely to vote for him.

Nineteen percent of independents, which tend to be an important variable in who wins the presidency, say Romney's wealth makes them less likely to vote for him.

The poll comes as President Obama and Democrats have tried to make Romney's wealth an issue, hammering Romney's finances. Vice President Joe Biden, fellow Democrats and various TV ads have attacked Romney over offshore bank accounts and failing to release his tax returns.

Those making less than $24,000 are most likely to have negative views of Mitt Romney's finances, with 28 percent saying they are less likely to vote for him because of it, compared to 18 percent who make more than $90,000.

The poll surveyed 873 registered voters and has a 4 percent margin of error,
