Orioles Place Ripken On DL

Cal Ripken was placed on the disabled list Tuesday with a sore back, the second time this season the Baltimore Orioles' third baseman has been disabled.

Ripken, who had never been on the disabled list before this year, received a cortisone shot to relieve irritation in his lower back Tuesday. He went on the DL from April 18-May 13 with nerve irritation in his lower back.

Ripken, who played in 2,632 consecutive games until stopping the streak last year, is hitting .335 with 15 home runs and 47 RBIs. He is one homer away from 400 and 32 hits shy of 3,000 in his career.

Ripken returned to Baltimore on Monday for an examination and was put on the disabled list retroactive to Sunday.

The Orioles recalled third baseman Ryan Minor from Triple-A Rochester to take Ripken's place. Minor was batting .256 with 21 homers and 67 RBI in 101 games with Rochester. He also was 1-for-10 in four games with Baltimore in July.
