Obama's "Jedi mind meld" gaffe stirs jokes on Twitter

President Obama set the Twitterverse on fire when he mixed science fiction references during a sequester-related press conferenceFriday.

Obama said he couldn't do a "Jedi mind meld" to force Republican leaders to come to an agreement over the sequester, which will cut $85 billion from the budget this fiscal year and $1.1 trillion more over 10 years.

CBS Boston reports fans were quick to react to Obama's mix-up of sci-fi references and the term "Jedi mind meld" quickly went viral on Twitter. The term "Jedi mind trick" is from "Star Wars," while "Vulcan mind meld" is from "Star Trek."

Other Twitter users were quick to point out that there is such a thing as a Jedi mind meld, although technically it's a Force meld that is sometimes called a Jedi meld. According to Wookieepedia, the term appears in the expanded universe novel "Star Wars: Outbound Flight."

The White House ran with the jokes and released a photo response of its own on Twitter, with a caption that reads: "These cuts aren't the solutions Americans are looking for. To deny the facts would be illogical."
