Obama campaign: "We got beat"

(CBS News) The Obama campaign raised less money than presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney during the month of May, and the Obama campaign is using that fact to motivate voters to donate.

"We got beat," senior campaign adviser Jim Messina used in the subject line of an email to supporters, asking them to "close the gap" and donate at least $3.

"For the first time in this campaign, we got beat in fundraising," Messina wrote, adding that he "knew this moment would come when Romney secured the nomination."

The Romney campaign and the Republican National Committee raised a total of $76.8 million during May, which is the first full month since Romney clinched the nomination. Republican Party officials predicted that May would be a strong month as donors rallied around a final candidate.

The Obama campaign raised more than $60 million in May, up from the $43.6 million he raised in April.

"We don't have the special-interest and high-dollar donor advantage that Romney has," Messina continued. "Barack Obama has you."
