NHL K.O.: Yzerman, CuJo, Kozlov

Detroit Red Wings captain suffered a broken nose when a pass from teammate Paul Coffey struck him on the right side of the face during Thursday night's 4-1 victory against the Carolina Hurricanes.

Yzerman, picked to start in Sunday's NHL All-Star Game in Tampa, is not expected to play because of the injury. He also suffered a deep cut and lacerations.

The incident occurred with the score tied 1-1 and 10:15 remaining in the second period.

The cut was bad enough that blood dripped on the ice where Yzerman fell.

  • Also expected to miss the All-Star Game is Florida Panthers center Viktor Kozlov and Toronto Maple Leafs goalie Curtis Joseph.

Joseph, a big reason for his team's turnaround, strained his groin in Thursday night's 4-2 victory over his former club, the St. Louis Blues.

Joseph, 31, suffered the injury early in the game and was replaced by with 6:27 left in the first period. He is 21-13-3 with a 2.73 goals-against average.

"We're not certain," answered Toronto coach Pat Quinn when asked how long Joseph would be out. "He came over to the bench and advised us. He asked to let him try it a little bit longer and then he came over and said he couldn't go. I have no idea how long he will be out."

Kozlov suffered a shoulder injury in Wednesday night's 5-2 victory against the Islanders.

Kozlov's injury means the Panthers will be one of two NHL teams -- the Islanders are the other -- not represented in the game.
