He served two terms in the state house while continuing his education at Yale and later on at Oxford University as a Marshall Scholar. In 1976, he also served as an alternate delegate to the Republican National Convention. Lucas chose not to run for re-election in 1978, and instead decided to pursue his career in the private sector.

• Lucas got his MBA from Harvard in 1982 and went to work at Bain & Company, an international management consulting firm. He was a partner and vice president there until 1990, when he left Bain to attend Harvard Law School. He earned his law degree in 1992.

• Although he hasn't held elective office sice 1978, Lucas has been active in state Republican politics in recent years. In 1996, he was Merrimack County co-chair for both the Phil Gramm presidential campaign and for U.S. Senator Bob Smith's re-election campaign. Lucas is currently the treasurer for the New Hampshire Republican State Committee.

• Lucas secured this year's GOP nomination after launching campaign ads six months in advance of the September primary and spending $900,000 of mostly his own money. He won the Republican primary over Jim Rubens, 35% to 31%.
