New Rules In Chinese Adoption
Katherine Lu Appleby, now 5, walked into her parents' lives at a Chinese hotel.
Dale and Betsy traveled all the way to China from Atlanta in May 2003. It takes courage to adopt, but they needed some extra — 2003 was the time of SARS and China was overwhelmed with fear, but Betsy was not among the afraid.
"I've got to get over there," she told Sunday Morning correspondent Barry Petersen then. "I really want to get my daughter; she's the one.
A potential worldwide epidemic did not stop her. "I'm not one of those people who gets super-hyper crazy about things like SARS. It's not going to stop this trip."
That was the day the Applebys became a family. Learn more about their story, and the changing rules for Chinese adoption, by watching
