Mitt Romney Stays Alive

This column was written by CBS News Early Show co-anchor Harry Smith.

Anyone who says they know what's going to happen in this incredible presidential race is either really smart or they don't know what they're talking about.

After New Hampshire, Mitt Romney was done, right? He spent all that money; he's been running forever. John McCain leaps to the lead in the national polls. Then Romney kicks some straight-talk butt in Michigan.

So now it's on to South Carolina where Mike Huckabee is breathing down McCain's neck. The front of the pack is not a safe place.

On the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton won in New Hampshire by sheer force of will. All her talk about experience turned into a heated conversation about race. And while a truce has been called, the net national effect seems to be a bounce for Obama. A new poll out today shows Clinton and Obama in a virtual tie.

And nobody I know would have predicted that.

Harry's daily commentary can be heard on many CBS Radio News affiliates across the country.
