Mechanical Trouble Forces Landing at Newark

A Continental flight bound for Japan returned to Newark and landed safely after experiencing mechanical difficulties.

The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed to CBS News that Continental Flight 9 returned to Newark Liberty International Airport owing to a "hydraulic problem."

Continental Flight 9 had left Newark at 11:25 a.m. ET, bound for Narita, Japan.

The flight landed safely back at Newark around 12:15 p.m. without incident.

CBS Station WCBS reports receiving calls from New Jersey residents witnessing the plane circling overhead and dumping fuel.

Continental spokesperson Julie King told CBS News that all passengers will be put on a different aircraft and flown to their original destination this afternoon.
