(CBS) Tim Allen made his return to sitcom TV on Tuesday night in ABC's "Last Man Standing," as the lead-in for the "Dancing With the Stars" results show.

The show made a strong debut in the ratings, earning 13 million viewers in the 8 p.m. time slot against baseball and CBS' "NCIS," according to Deadline.

The 59-year-old actor stars as Mike Baxter, a "man's man" who works for an outdoor sporting goods store. At home, he's the odd man out surrounded by his wife (Nancy Travis) and three daughters.

Allen spent eight years playing TV 's "tool man" Tim Taylor on "Home Improvement," which went off the air in 1999. Since then, he has had a number of film roles, including the starring role in the "Santa Clause" movies and the voice of Buzz Lightyear in the Toy Story" franchise.

So, what are critics saying about his new show? The consensus seems to be that "Last Man Standing" is too much like "Home Improvement," with outdoor sports filling in for "Tool Time," Travis for Patricia Richardson and the three daughters for Taylor's three boys.

Others have said that the show's jokes fall flat and play up stereotypes. But even the show's harshest critics concede that Allen can still deliver a line.
