Kidnapper Gets 170 Extra Years In Prison

A man already serving multiple life sentences for kidnapping two boys was sentenced on Friday to 170 years in federal court for making pornography of one of the boy he kidnapped and sexually assaulted.

Michael Devlin, a former pizzeria manager in Missouri, is already serving multiple life terms for kidnapping and assaulting Shawn Hornbeck and Ben Ownby. This time around, a federal judge went well beyond the sentencing guideline of 30 years.

The sentence followed from a guilty plea Devlin entered in October to six counts of making pornographic photos and videotapes of Hornbeck, who was abducted at age 11 in 2001. Devlin was also sentenced Friday for taking Hornbeck across state lines on trips to Illinois and Arizona with the intent of sexually assaulting him.

Sean Hornbeck's mother, Pam Akers, asked the judge for the harshest sentence saying Devlin showed no mercy for her son, and it was her hope that the court would show no mercy, reports CBS News affiliate KMOV-TV.

"For 1,558 days he tortured my son physically, mentally and emotionally. Most parents can't bear the thought of their child being tortured for one day," said Akers.

Sean's father, Craig Akers, said that this was the fourth and final time that he would have to share the room with Devlin, whom he called a "monster."

"He must one day face the ultimate judgment and we are confident he will be made to pay the eternal price for his sins," said Akers, reports KMOV.

The Associated Press generally does not identify victims of sexual assaults, but the identities of Devlin's victims became widely known in the coverage of his arrest and prosecution.

Devlin, 42, was sentenced to multiple life sentences in October after admitting to crimes in three different Missouri counties connected to the abductions of Hornbeck and 13-year-old Ben Ownby in January. Both boys were found in Devlin's apartment four days after Ownby was abducted.

At the federal sentencing hearing Friday, Devlin appeared thinner, with a heavier beard. He showed no emotion, except for an occasional twitch of his shackled hands.

Authorities still have not determined where Devlin will serve his prison sentence. Missouri prison officials are so concerned about his safety because of the nature of his crimes that they have said he may be moved to an out-of-state prison or placed in protective custody. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Friday that prison officials may even provide him with a different identity.

Hornbeck was abducted while riding his bike near his home. Ownby was taken soon after getting off a school bus not far from his home in another county in Missouri.

A classmate of Ownby's noticed a white pickup truck speeding away. His description led police to Devlin.

Prosecutors have said Devlin tortured Shawn during his first days in captivity and made the boy promise not to flee to stay alive - a deal Hornbeck's father called a "devil's bargain" that kept the teen under Devlin's sway for more than four years, even after he had Internet and telephone access.
