Katie Couric's Notebook: Dancing Babies

Have you seen that YouTube video of a baby shaking its booty to Beyonce's "Single Ladies"?

Chances are - you have.

The original got more than 10 million hits and was one of the most popular viral videos of 2009.

Baby Cory may have been especially talented, but a new study finds that a lot of infants can bust a move.

Researchers from England and Finland studied 120 babies between the ages of 5 months and 2 years. They placed them on their parents' laps and played them different sounds to see if... and how...they moved. And move they did. When researchers played music or rhythmic beats, the babies bopped along, shakin' what their mamas gave 'em. And the more synchronized they were with the music, the more they smiled.

The researchers aren't sure why humans have this innate desire to shake their groove thing...but maybe it doesn't matter.

A dancing tot is a happy one.

So forget rock-a-bye baby and crank up Lady Gaga instead.

That's a page from my notebook.

I'm Katie Couric, CBS News.
