Judge sides with biker gang in logo dispute

(CBS/AP) LOS ANGELES - Even a violent motorcycle gang has the right to its name and trademarked logo, a federal judge in Los Angeles ruled Thursday.

U.S. District Judge Otis Wright granted a petition that lets the notorious Mongols biker gang keep control of their name, and allows gang members to wear and distribute their logo.

Prosecutors had sought to take control of the Mongol name, as well as the insignia that shows a pony-tailed Genghis Khan-like figure aboard a motorcycle.

The effort was part of an indictment that accuses gang members of murder, drug trafficking and torture. More than 100 people faced charges in state and federal courts, and dozens have pleaded guilty to crimes ranging from drug possession to conspiracy.

Judge Wright's ruling vacated a preliminary order of forfeiture against the biker gang.
