Joe Trippi asks "are voters followers?" on Real Time Conversation

(CBS/What's Trending) We may be 18 months away from the Presidential election, but the campaign online has already begun to heat up. We talked to digital political correspondent Joe Trippi during our Real Time Conversation on yesterday's show to find out if social media is going to help swing votes in 2012.

Newt Gingrich announced his run at the White House to his over 1.3 million followers over Twitter. As the GOP builds up its new media presence, the question is can anyone compete with President Obama and his nearly 7 million Twitter followers? Or Obama's 20 million likes on Facebook, more than triple than the entire GOP field combined?

Panelists actress and Dancing with the Stars' finalist Chelsea Kane and "The Young Turks" and MSNBC political correspondent Cenk Uygur added their opinions on whether or not followers online translate into ballots.

Bryguystyle agreed Trippi on how being true and believable in your campaign really matters. In our Election 2012 poll during the live show we asked viewers, "Do you vote for who you follow?" Forty-five percent of you said that you follow multiple candidates. Thirty-eight percent of you do not follow politicians at all online, and 16 percent of you only want to read from people you are likely to vote for. Do you agree with our results? Let us know.
