James Dyson unveils most expensive (yet really neat) space heater

Dyson

(CBS) - By now, we're all familiar with the bladeless Dyson Air Multiplier fan. Even though, they're quite a splurge at $299 to $449, buyers say they're worth it because they - well - work really well, and are safe for those curious kids who would otherwise stick their fingers through other fan blades. (We could hear their yelps and cries already.)

British industrial designer Sir James Dyson has a new household appliance that'll wow you. He just unveiled the Dyson Hot, which can heat a room to between 34 and 99 degrees Fahrenheit. It does this by bringing air through a pump and shelling it out to create jets of warmth. And, it too, doesn't have blades.

The remote-controlled gadget, which took 22 engineers and three years to perfect, is a whopping $400, making it the most expensive space heater we've seen.

Our friends at CNET have been playing with the high-tech appliance. "In case you're wondering, the Hot also acts as a standard cooling fan, though not an air conditioner, even though the thermostat goes down to 32 degrees. As we said, it automatically shuts off when the air around it hits the number on the thermostat or rises above it. In other words, if the temperature in the room is 70 degrees and you lower the thermostat to 60, the fan/heater won't turn on," CNET reports. "However, there's a little trick to turning the Hot into a standard fan: you lower the thermostat to 32 degrees, which changes the color of the power button from red to blue and puts the Hot in standard blowing mode sans heat."

Genius!
