J. Gonzalez Getting A Divorce

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) Merengue singer Olga Tanon confirmed Friday that she has filed for divorce from Detroit Tigers slugger Juan Gonzalez after less than one year of marriage.

"I've separated from my husband and started the process to dissolve our marriage," Tanon said in a written statement. "This is a very difficult and painful time, for the respect and affection that I feel toward Juan, with whom I shared five years of my life."

Gonzalez the AL Most Valuable Player in 1996 and 1998 for the Texas Rangers married Tanon in a ceremony at San Juan's Ritz Carlton hotel in December 1998. The pair have a 3-year-old daughter, Gabriela.

It's Gonzalez's fourth marriage and the second for Tanon.

Gonzalez was traded earlier this month from Texas to Detroit.
