The Cell Sells At U.S. Cinemas

Weekend box office figures provide further indication that Jennifer Lopez's star is on the rise.

She leads the cast of The Cell, which was the No. 1 movie at U.S. theaters over the weekend. This, even as she gets ready to release two more pop albums and continues as one of the reigning divas in music video.

Here are the top 10 films, according to Hollywood.com:

 1. The Cell, $17.2 million
 2. The Original Kings of Comedy, $11.7 million
 3. Space Cowboys, $9.9 million
 4. The Replacements, $7.5 million
 5. What Lies Beneath, $7.1 million
 6. Nutty Professor 2: The Klumps, $6.4 million
 7. Hollow Man, $6.1 million
 8. Autumn in New York, $5.7 million
 9. Coyote Ugly, $5.0 million
 10. Bless the Child, $4.9 million
In taking The Cell to first place, Lopez has proved that she has star power, reports CBS News Early Show Contributor Laurie Hibberd. (Her last movie, Out of Sight, performed well, but not as well as The Cell.)

The other big film this weekend, The Original Kings of Comedy, is a showcase for four comedians. Its No. 2 placement is phenomenal, because it only opened on 800 screens, yet took in $11.7 million. By comparison, The Cell needed 2,400 screens to take in $17.2 million.

On the other hand, Godzilla 2000, another new movie, didn't even make the Top 10. It came in at No. 11, but Sony is not complaining. The company paid only $300,000 to release this movie, and so it already has made its money back. This Godzilla is not laden with state-of-the-art special effects; it really hearkens back to the old Godzilla movies.
