iPhone 4 Pre-Ordering Goes Live

Apple's iPhone 4 became available for pre-ordering early Tuesday but AT&T, the exclusive carrier network for the device, warned that high demand may slow down deliveries.

"Pre-orders for iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS 8G will be processed to arrive as early as June 24, 2010, if submitted by 2 p.m. ET, June 22, 2010," AT&T wrote on its web site. "The actual shipment date and receipt of your order is not guaranteed and may be subject to delays for reasons that include, but are not limited to, product availability, inventory, credit issues, number porting or carrier delays, and completion of other required AT&T business processes."

Apple, Best Buy and Radio Shack are also taking pre-orders. The black iPhone 4 is available to pre-order today with free shipping or in-store pickup on June 24. So far, however, the white iPhone 4, remains "currently unavailable" for pre-order or in-store pickup, according to Apple. When Apple announced last week that the iPhone 4 would be available in 16GB and 32GB versions, it also said the device would be available in two colors, black and white.

In Japan, early heavy demand overwhelmed computers and caused long lines at retail outlets operated by Softbank Mobile Corp., the iPhone's exclusive carrier in Japan. The country's seven Apple Stores also were taking pre-orders in advance of the June 24 launch.

In the United Kingdom, The Telegraph reported that Apple's website was sluggish "with attempts to pre-order frequently resulting in error message or time-outs."

In mid-morning trading on Wall Street, shares of Apple were up more than $3.
