Image: A "Recoiling Black Hole"
Though they remain divided about how it came into existence, NASA scientists have uncovered evidence for "a recoiling black hole" in space. Scientists pieced the story together using information culled from the Chandra X-ray Observatory, XMM-Newton, the Hubble Space Telescope, and several ground-based telescopes.
This black hole kickback, as it's being described, occurred in one of two ways. The first explanation: a so-called slingshot effect that was produced in a triple black hole system. The other ideas is that it resulted from gravitational waves generated by the merger of a couple of super-massive black holes a few million years earlier.
