IKEA recalls two children's beds over laceration fears
IKEA is recalling two children's beds due to concerns that part of product may come off and hurt a child.
The company said on Thursday it is recalling batches of KRITTER and SNIGLAR beds in the U.S. and Canada. The items come with a guard rail on one side, which contains a metal piece that can break off and hurt someone.
There has already been one report in the U.S. and one report in Canada of the metal rod breaking on the bed, but there are no reports of injury.
"IKEA has received reports of the metal rod breaking at the attachment point to the bed side rail. This can result in partial detachment of the guard rail and exposed sharp metal edges that present a laceration hazard," the company wrote in a statement.
The KRITTER beds are made of pine and have animal cut-outs on the headboard. They have a date stamp of 1114 to 1322, which represents the year and week of production.
The SNIGLAR beds are made of natural beech wood and have a white painted fiberboard insert on the headboard and footboard of the bed. They are date stamped 1114 to 1318.
Customers can find the information on a label attached to the headboard or the underside of the bed.
The recall will affect about 22,000 beds in the U.S. and 18,000 in Canada, the Consumer Product Safety Commission reported. The beds were sold in those countries from 2005 to May 2013.
The company says it has sold about 200,000 of the products worldwide.
The beds in question were manufactured in Poland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Romania, a Canadian government website Healthy Canadians reported.
If you are currently using one of the recalled beds, IKEA says to contact their customer service at (888) 966-4532. The company will send you a repair kit free of charge with a replacement metal rod, tools and an instruction sheet.
