Hull-Less Stars Settle For Tie

Kelly Chase figured it was time to get his teammates and the home crowd into the game.

After all, the St. Louis Blues were trailing the Dallas Stars 2-0 and not showing much spark.

"I figured it would help to get the crowd into it and get the steam stirred up, too," Chase said after the Blues came from behind to tie the Dallas Stars 3-3 Saturday night.

Chase picked a fight with Grant Marshall and both players went to the penalty box, but the momentum seemed to shift to the Blues.

"We got off to a slow start and I just thought it was time to stir things up," Chase said.

Chase got a rare assist on the Blues' second goal to keep the momentum going.

By the time Pierre Turgeon scored the tying goal for St. Louis with less than 13 minutes remaining, the Stars were on the run.

"We don't feel good at all," said coach Ken Hitchcok when asked if he was happy to get a point in a road game.

He said the Blues played a tougher game than his team.

"They were more hungry than we were for 60 minutes," he said. "We tried to sit on it and once we got back on our heels, we couldn't get going again."

Mike Modano and Marshall each had a goal and an assist for the Stars, who were playing for the second consecutive night.

The Stars were without Brett Hull, who suffered a bruised kidney Friday night and did not make the trip to St. Louis.

Many in the sellout crowd booed when Hull's name was included in the announcement of the players who were scratched from the game. Hull was one of the most proficient and popular players in Blues history before signing as a free agent with the Stars in the off-season.

Turgeon scored the tying goal at 7:04 of the third period after taking pass in front of the goal from Pascal Rheaume.

Ed Belfour replaced starter Roman Turek in goal after the Blues tied the game.

The Stars had won three in a row and are 4-1-2 in their last six games. The Blues are 2-2-2 in their last six.

The Stars led 2-0 after the first period on goals by Modano and Marshall.

Modano scored a power-play goal at 8:03 on a rebound of a shot by Darryl Sydor. Modano has two goals and four assists in his last six games.

Marshall gave the stars a 2-0 lead at 16:15 on a shot that beat goaltender Jamie McLennan on the short side. McLennan left the game with back spasms after the first period and was replaced by Rich Parent.

Jamie Langenbrunner scored a power-play goal at 16:09 of the second period to make it 3-0.

The Blues scored at 18:33 of the second period on a power-play goal by Pavol Demitra. Mike Eastwood cut the score to 3-2 at 4:17 of the third period when he knocked in a rebound of a shot by Tony Twist.

The Stars had a power play for more than three minutes of the overtime period, but could not score.
