Heather: I'm No Gold Digger

Heather Mills McCartney has fired the latest salvo in her very public and bitter breakup with husband Paul McCartney, defending herself against various nasty rumors.

In her first broadcast interview since the split, Heather tells the TV show "Extra" that she married Paul for love, not for money, and she denies she's carrying on with her personal trainer.

Mills also asserts that lots of people see her side, saying, "I get people coming up to me in the street hugging and kissing me."

CBS News correspondent Mark Phillips reports that, when asked why she married Paul, Heather responds: "I'm a good person. I fell in love for the right reason. I fell in love unconditionally."

On the essential question of whether she's playing hardball in the divorce proceedings in order to take Paul to the cleaners, Heather says: "Eighty-five percent of my income goes to my charity. The word gold digger doesn't go with that. ... If I was a gold digger, I would have a lot of money in my bank account. ... I'd be worth millions and millions.''

Heather is said to have been offered about a quarter of Paul's billion-and-a-half dollar fortune, but is reportedly holding out for more.

On whether she's been having an affair with her personal trainer, Heather says: "I haven't got a lover. At the moment, I'm focusing on my daughter. It's totally made up!''

For his part, Paul did a radio interview Nov. 3 in which he appealed for privacy, saying: "I think a relationship with a partner is intensely personal, and I prefer to keep it that way. I think, when you are going through difficulties, I think the thing to do, for the sake of all the people concerned, is to keep a certain dignity and remember that it is a private affair, and that that way, you will probably get through it better."

Paul also had all references to Heather deleted from the just-released video of his last U.S. tour, which she was on.

Still, for all of Heather's efforts, says Phillips, the perception is that Paul is winning the public relations battle.

One man on a London street remarked: "Paul McCartney has made the world a better place to be and, so, who cares about Heather Mills?"

That, apparently, the courts will decide, Phillips says.
