From Prison To The Presidency

Bill Clinton is the president of the United States. Nelson Mandela is the president of South Africa. And the two recently took a trip to jail.

Mr. Clinton and Mr. Mandela went there to visit the cell where Mr. Mandela was once a prisoner.

That happened when South Africa had a system called apartheid in which white people were treated much better than blacks. Because he fought against that system, Mr. Mandela was arrested and locked up for 27 years.
But in the early 1990s, everything changed. Mr. Mandela was freed from prison. Apartheid was ended. And in the first election where both blacks and whites could vote, he was elected president.
