Ford Trades "Indie" Hat for Lab Coat

Harrison Ford thrills audiences as fictional heroes such as "Indiana Jones" and "Han Solo." But in his newest film, Ford stars in a drama based on the real story of a remarkable family and their heartbreaking struggle.

Entertainment Tonight's Mark Steines talked to Ford about what it was like to trade in his "Indiana Jones'" hat for a lab coat.

The film, "Extraordinary Measures," is inspired by the true story of John and Aileen Crowley, played by Brendan Fraser and Keri Russell.

Two of the Crowley's three children were diagnosed with a a rare, fatal genetic disorder. John Crowley ran a biotech company focusing on developing a life-saving drug. Ford stars as the researcher who helps them search for a cure.

"When you hear the story, you begin to think 'wow, this is like some super hero guy who pushed through?'" Steines asked Ford.

"John's a remarkable guy. That is a story I think that we all honor and a story we all feel that we can become emotionally invested in," Ford said.

The storyline also moved Fraser, who is a father of three.

"And the enemy is time and time alone," Fraser added. "So, who is going to work harder and do whatever it takes it to get results? And that's what John Crowley did."

Ford is an executive producer on this drama from CBS Films, which tackles some very timely issues.

"The issue of medical insurance, the issue of the pharmaceutical industry and the difficulty of bringing a drug to market," Ford said.

Working alongside Ford has been a dream come true for Fraser, who has also taken on "Indiana Jones" type roles in "The Mummy."

"He's one of the guys. He's brilliant and on top of that and most everyone has hero worship for him. And I feel better, more accomplished and this is selfish and professionally personal - like I've earned another stripe now. He's the man," Fraser said.

Ford himself is very modest.

"Most of the complications in this story come from the facts. We were all moved by John Crowley's story and by the complication and detail of it," Ford said.

"Extraordinary Measures" opens in Jan. 22. For more celebrity news, watch "Entertainment Tonight." (Check your local listings.)
