Find Hidden Home Storage Space

Most of us have just too much stuff.

When tossing it isn't the answer, finding a place to put it can be tough.

But there some options for storage you might not have thought of that will cost you nothing -- or next to nothing.

On "The Early Show" Wednesday, Kristan Cunningham, design expert for Shelterpop.com, shared some clever ideas on where to tuck away those things you can't just bear to part with.

SHOE CABINETS:
Ikea HEMNES Shoe Cabinets in Black Brown Finish, 42 1/8" x 39 3/4"

For a Formal Entranceway:
What's cool about them is they are only 8" wide and very decorative. Put one or two in a hallway with a few knick-knacks, some sconces and a mirror over them and you have turned a drab hallway into a formal entrance-way.

WINE CRATE SHELVING:
Old Wine Crates - Vintage wooden crates (metal-reinforced corners are ideal)

For a Modular Shelving Unit:
Wooden wine crates, especially older ones, make a great modular shelving unit. Not only do they give a very unique, yet classy look, but the patina from the aging wood makes it look very rich. They can be stacked in any shape or hung on the wall. The secret is to incorporate them in your décor with ideas like framing a mirror or a flat screen TV (It can then double as an entertainment center). Use them to store china, candle sticks, vases, etc.

Liquor stores still give them away, but older ones can be pick up at flea markets for a couple of bucks. No matter what they cost, they are still many times cheaper than buying a new shelving unit that might not look nearly as nice.

VINTAGE LUGGAGE:
Vintage Suitcases in Varying Sizes

To Create a Work of Art:
Look at flea markets, second-hand stores and even your grandma's attic. The old luggage was very ornate and artsy looking, especially with tags and travel stickers. Stack three or four up and it's a great conversation piece. But don't open them up and show your guests all the winter clothes, blankets, keepsakes and linen you might be storing inside.

SLEEPER COUCH:
Walmart.com Sofa

To Create a Place to Sit, Sleep and Store:
Walmart.com has a great sleeper-sofa that has built in storage, all for around $400. It looks great and does triple duty. It's perfect for a guest room that can double as an office. Open it up, pull out the linens and blankets stored underneath and make it into a bed. Guests can then use the storage area to pack away their stuff during their stay. The uses are endless.

END TABE/FILE CABINET:
Discarded File Cabinet
Staples Vertical File Cabinet, 26 1/2"- 2 Drawer, Letter Size, Putty, $129.99

To Create an Easy End Table:
Don't toss those old file cabinets. They can get pretty ratty, but the deep big draws are perfect for storing lots of larger items you don't want to throw out but want out of sight. Fill the draws and cover the cabinet with a nicely hemmed drop cloth from Home Depot. Stick it next to the couch, put a lamp on top and you have the perfect end table. Cost: one less trip to the dump.
