Facebook gets Instagram-like filters on iOS app

Facebook quietly released an update Monday to its iOS app for iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches to include Instagram-like filters.

Facebook launched Facebook Camera in May, just months after it announced plans to purchase the popular mobile photo-sharing app Instagram.

Facebook Camera is similar to Instagram, in that it includes photo filters and a picture-based news feed. The latest features included in the social network's iOS app are exactly like those on Facebook Camera.

Tech Crunch first reported that the update Facebook released did not mention adding photo filters. But the social network did note it added the ability to share multiple photos quickly -- a feature that was already included in Facebook Camera.

Coincidentally, Instagram announcedMonday the launch of online profiles that look similar to Facebook Timeline. Some could argue that it's all in the family. Facebook finalized its purchase of Instagram for $715 million in October.

At the time of the initial announcement in April, Facebook chief executive officer Mark Zuckerberg addressed skepticism by reassuring Instagram users that the app would not be changed after the acquisition.

"We will try to learn from Instagram's experience to build similar features into our other products. At the same time, we will try to help Instagram continue to grow by using Facebook's strong engineering team and infrastructure," Zuckerberg said on his Facebook page.

Similarly, in a blog post announcing the Facebook acquisition, Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom wrote: "It's important to be clear that Instagram is not going away. We'll be working with Facebook to evolve Instagram and build the network. We'll continue to add new features to the product and find new ways to create a better mobile photos experience."
