Ex-Allman Brother Dead In NYC Hotel

A former member of the Allman Brothers Band is dead.

Police in Queens, New York, say the body of Douglas Allen Woody was found in a motel room Saturday morning.

There were no signs of trauma, and the cause of death isn't known.

Woody was a bass player for the rock band, starting in 1989, in one of the later incarnations of the group, which reached stardom in the 1970s.

He left in April 1997 along with slide guitarist Warren Haynes -- and they formed a musical trio called Gov't Mule. That group released several albums.

Woody was 44 years old and lived in Nashville.

He is survived by his wife, Jenny, and their 3-year-old daughter, Savannah.

The Allman Brothers are noted for their extended jams and Grateful Dead-like following.
