Daly Explodes In Final Round

Not only will this year's U.S. Open be the last of the 20th century, but it could also be the last of John Daly's career.

At least that's what Daly said after posting a final-round 83, which included an 11 on the par-4 eighth hole.

"I'm done," Daly said. "This is my last U.S. Open."

"The U.S. Open is not John Daly's kind of golf. Yesterday was ridiculous. I now know why Bruce Lietzke does not play the U.S. Open. It's not golf. It's crazy."

Daly, who also made a triple-bogey 6 on the par-3 sixth hole, was penalized two shots for hitting a ball still in motion on the eighth hole.

"I was just standing up for the players," he said of the penalty. "I wasn't going to make a scene. I just decided to do the same thing Kirk Triplett did last year. I'll take my fine."

Last year, Triplett hit a putt still in motion on the 18th hole at the Olympic Club on Saturday to protest what many players felt was an unfair pin position.

"I did not interpret his (Daly's) actions the same way," said Tom Kite, who played with him Sunday. "He lost his composure."

"My hat's off to whoever wins," Daly continued. "But I'm not gonna sit here and waste my time. My majors would be the British Open, the PGA, the Masters and the Tour Championship. I don't consider the U.S. Open a major anymore."

"I'm not going to Pebble Beach next year and let the USGA ruin that course too."

At 29 over, Daly finished the Open in last place.
